Five Dog Joint Supplements: What Is Actually Inside the Chew?

Five joint supplements contain different ingredients. We compare the exact formulas and explain which products the clinical research actually tested.

When a dog begins taking their first steps more carefully, we want to understand what has changed. The joint-supplement shelf offers many reassuring promises, but the products inside are different. We compared five exact formulas, the dogs their makers say they suit and how closely the retail products match the clinical research.

Antinol Plus, Cosequin Chewable Tablets Plus MSM, Dasuquin Large Dog Soft Chews, YuMOVE Large Dog Joint Health Chews and Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet Soft Gels approach the category with different ingredients and formats. They are candidates for an evidence-led discussion with a veterinarian, rather than five interchangeable remedies for pain.

Match the study to the product. Research on a particular mussel-and-krill oil blend does not establish that any fish oil works the same way. A study of glucosamine alone cannot tell us what a chew containing several ingredients will do.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) calls for changes in movement and behavior to be assessed alongside a veterinary examination in its 2022 pain guidelines. A supplement comparison cannot identify their cause. We explain the formulas and evidence we could verify, including where a product’s benefit remains unestablished.

We were unable to independently verify the exact current formulas for Cosequin, Dasuquin and Nordic Naturals. The ingredient quantities reported below are manufacturer declarations, not independently verified measurements or findings of clinical benefit.

We’ll start with how to compare a complete joint-supplement formula, then look at five products and the difference between mussel powder and an oil blend. The side-by-side comparison will lead us back to the clinical study, including the important question of whether its tested formula matches the product sold now.

Let’s start with the whole joint-supplement formula

Before comparing familiar ingredient names, let’s look at the complete product and the dogs it is intended for. Compare the full formula, the dog size specified by the maker and research on that exact product. These five products differ in those respects. Sharing an ingredient does not show that they have the same effect.

Prices below are observed item amounts, not delivered totals. No destination-specific tax or shipping calculation is included; confirm the final charges and availability at checkout.

Is green-lipped mussel powder the same as a marine-oil blend?

A shared source ingredient can take different forms, so “mussel” alone is not enough to match two products. The makers list green-lipped mussel powder in YuMOVE’s current large-dog chew and mussel and krill oils in Antinol Plus. Powder and oil are different preparations. The 2024 Antinol Rapid trial cannot establish what the current U.S. YuMOVE chew does.

How to read the comparison: Unless a study or institutional finding is identified, product descriptions come from the named manufacturers’ records. A listed feature does not establish a health, safety or performance benefit. An unresolved entry means we could not verify the information, not that the product lacks it.

Which differences in these five joint supplements matter to the choice?

To understand what these differences mean for the evidence, let’s return to the exact product used in the study. Kampa and colleagues tested Antinol Rapid EAB-277 in dogs with hip osteoarthritis in 2024. We could not establish whether the tested formula fully matches Antinol Plus sold now. Cosequin and Dasuquin list different ingredient combinations; YuMOVE contains mussel powder, while Nordic Naturals offers an oil soft gel. Those differences need to stay visible when discussing the research with a veterinarian.

The aim is a dog who moves more comfortably under an appropriate veterinary plan. A longer ingredient list cannot tell us whether that will happen.

What We Still Want To Know

We still need to know whether current Antinol Plus fully matches the Antinol Rapid formula tested in 2024. For the exact Cosequin, Dasuquin, U.S. YuMOVE and Nordic products, we also want recent studies that identify the formula, the dogs tested, what changed in their movement and who funded the work. More ingredients or a familiar name cannot supply that evidence.

Questions for the Pack

For veterinary professionals reading current joint-supplement research: which recent study identifies one of these exact retail formulations, and how clearly does it document the match to the product on the shelf? We would welcome that source as a reporting lead, rather than treat a brand name or owner response as clinical proof.

Research details

Kampa and colleagues randomly assigned 101 dogs with hip osteoarthritis to treatments and measured changes over six weeks in the force dogs put through a leg while trotting. Dogs given Antinol Rapid EAB-277 improved more on that measure than those given placebo or 4CYTE Epiitalis Forte Gel. The meloxicam group also improved more. Dogs had to be at least 18 months old, weigh at least 15 kilograms and be able to complete the trotting assessment. Dogs with systemic or neurological disease, those pregnant or lactating, and those with recent joint surgery were excluded. The result does not establish an effect in those excluded dogs or in every product sharing an ingredient or brand. Pharmalink International funded the work. The match between tested Antinol Rapid and current retail Antinol Plus remains unresolved.

No hands-on administration or clinical trial was conducted by WatersEdge.
