Five Cat Supplements for Constipation: What the Labels Say
Fiber capsules, blended powders, a probiotic packet and a synbiotic chew, compared by their actual ingredients and claimed purpose.

Difficulty passing urine is urgent. If your cat is struggling in the litter box, it is entirely understandable to want to help them feel comfortable again. Before a supplement can have a useful place in that conversation, the veterinarian needs to find out what is causing the difficulty.
Below, we’ll separate product claims from demonstrated benefits, meet five different formulas, and compare fiber with probiotic approaches. We’ll keep the need to understand your cat’s litter-box difficulty at the center throughout.
The products are VETASYL Fiber Capsules, Proviable Fiber Powder, Fera Pumpkin Plus, Visbiome Vet Constipation Care and VetriScience Gut Health for Cats. Some are marketed for constipation; others are fiber products to discuss only if the veterinarian considers fiber appropriate.
Fiber and probiotics do different things. Comparing the labels can help clarify a veterinary discussion, but it does not make these products interchangeable treatments.

A cat straining in the litter box needs veterinary assessment. Difficulty passing urine is urgent. According to Merck Veterinary Manual, fiber may be appropriate for some constipation problems, but the cause and the cat’s water intake need to be considered first. This guide supplies no treatment dose and does not present five products as proven cures or substitutes for hydration and appropriate medical care.
Let’s start with what the product claims establish
The useful first distinction is between what a maker says and what research has shown. We did not find evidence showing that these five products are effective treatments for feline constipation. VETASYL and Proviable are fiber products a veterinarian may consider. The makers of Fera, Visbiome Constipation Care and VetriScience mention constipation in their product descriptions. Those claims do not establish that the products work.

Virbac VETASYL Fiber Capsules, 100 count
Listed price: USD 36.95 for 100 capsules. EntirelyPets Pharmacy / Heartland Vet Supply fulfillment
What we like about it: VETASYL lists psyllium husks and barley malt in a capsule. That relatively short ingredient list gives the veterinarian a clear formula to consider if fiber is appropriate.
Highlights about the product
- Presentation: Fiber capsules
- Main formulation distinction: Psyllium husks; barley malt
- Maker’s stated use in cats: Cats named in product description

Nutramax Proviable Fiber Powder
Listed price: USD 42.99 for 200 g tub. Smarty Vets
What we like about it: Proviable identifies the fibers in its mixture, including cellulose, apple fiber and psyllium. That lets you and the veterinarian compare the actual ingredients rather than treating every fiber powder as the same.
Highlights about the product
- Presentation: Mixed-fiber powder
- Main formulation distinction: Cellulose/apple/psyllium/beta-glucans/acacia
- Maker’s stated use in cats: Cats named in product description
For more details,

Fera Pumpkin Plus Fiber Support for Dogs and Cats
Listed price: USD 34.95 for 8 oz (227 g) jar, SKU 4596. Fera Pets
What we like about it: The ingredient list reveals a blend behind the pumpkin name. Seeing the other botanical sources makes the powder an interesting counterpart to the simpler psyllium capsule.
Highlights about the product
- Presentation: Botanical-fiber powder
- Main formulation distinction: Pumpkin and seven additional listed botanical ingredients
- Maker’s stated use in cats: Cats named in product description

Is Visbiome Constipation Care the same as Advanced GI Care?
Similar names can make different formulas easy to confuse. According to Visbiome’s manufacturer, its feline Constipation Care packets contain the eight-strain SLAB51 formulation; Advanced GI Care uses a different blend. They are different products with different bacterial blends. The manufacturer’s December 2023 launch announcement identifies SLAB51 and feline constipation positioning; it does not establish comparative clinical efficacy.

Visbiome Vet Constipation Care, 100 Billion CFU Packets
Listed price: USD 66.95 for 30 packets. ExeGi Pharma / Visbiome Vet
What we like about it: The maker identifies the eight-strain SLAB51 blend and specifies refrigerated storage. Both matter when matching the packets to research and deciding whether the handling routine is workable.
Highlights about the product
- Presentation: Probiotic packets
- Main formulation distinction: Eight identified SLAB51 strains; not a fiber product
- Maker’s stated use in cats: Specifically marketed for constipation in cats
For more details,

VetriScience Gut Health for Cats, SKU 090053C.060
Listed price: USD 10.30 for 60 duck-flavored chews. Chewy
What we like about it: A chew is a different way to offer a supplement from a capsule or powder. VetriScience identifies the probiotic bacterium and the prebiotic ingredient included to support it, although the maker and seller report different bacterial counts.
Highlights about the product
- Presentation: Probiotic/prebiotic chew
- Main formulation distinction: B. coagulans bacteria plus FOS prebiotic fiber; maker lists 120 million colony-forming units (CFU) per chew, seller lists 20 million; discrepancy unresolved
- Maker’s stated use in cats: Cats named in product description

How to read the comparison: Unless a study or institutional finding is identified, product descriptions come from the named manufacturers’ records. A listed feature does not establish a health, safety or performance benefit. An unresolved entry means we could not verify the information, not that the product lacks it.

How do the fiber and probiotic approaches differ?
Now we can see two different kinds of supplement in the same comparison. If the veterinarian considers fiber appropriate, compare the fiber sources: VETASYL is largely psyllium, while Proviable and Fera combine several sources. That does not show which will help a particular cat. Visbiome and VetriScience instead offer different probiotic combinations, with their own ingredients and storage requirements.
We did not establish that these five products are effective treatments for the same constipation problem. Their different ingredients are worth comparing only after the cat’s problem and the reason for using a supplement are understood.
Merck’s clinical discussion makes the underlying problem and adequate water intake part of assessing fiber. This product comparison cannot determine an individual cat’s plan. The goal is a comfortable trip to the litter box. Knowing what is causing the difficulty matters more than a persuasive label.
Can these supplements replace assessment of a cat straining in the litter box?
These five feline bowel-care supplements do not replace veterinary assessment or establish the cause of litter-box straining. Merck Veterinary Manual calls for prompt relief of urinary obstruction; difficulty passing urine is urgent. Product records do not establish that every constipated cat benefits from fiber or a probiotic. The veterinarian first needs to work out what is wrong and whether a supplement has a role.

What We Still Want To Know
We would like recent studies of these exact products in cats with clearly diagnosed bowel problems. For fiber products, the study should explain why fiber was appropriate for those cats. Some handling instructions and package details also remain unresolved.
Questions for the Pack
For veterinary readers following feline bowel-care research: have you found a study of one of these exact formulas in cats with a diagnosed bowel problem? We would love to read it. Please share the source and the product version studied; anecdotes cannot establish a constipation treatment.
