An indoor cat may spend the morning patrolling a window, interrupting a meeting and performing a brief, ambitious sprint through the hallway. “Indoor” describes the setting. It does not tell us the animal’s age, muscle condition, appetite, activity or medical history. In comparing dry food for indoor adult cats, WatersEdge reads the lifestyle label alongside the nutritional statement, because they answer different questions.

We compared Hill’s Adult Indoor Chicken, Open Farm Goodbowl Harvest Chicken & Brown Rice, Royal Canin Indoor Adult, Purina Pro Plan Adult Indoor + Hairball Turkey & Rice, and IAMS Adult Indoor Weight & Hairball Care Chicken & Turkey. We looked at the cats each label says it suits, how nutritional adequacy is supported and the reported calories. We have not established one as better for an individual indoor cat.

An “indoor” label describes the intended lifestyle. The nutritional statement tells you which life stage the food is designed to support and how that was established.

Let’s begin with the cat rather than the indoor label, then compare five foods by their intended life stages and nutrition statements. We’ll look at calories and portions as separate questions and bring the exact label differences together, including the information we could not verify.

A NOTE FROM WATERSEDGE

We read the research, we talk to people who do this work, and we try to make complicated animal-health information easier to understand. What you’re reading reflects how we’ve interpreted and organized what we found. It is educational, not veterinary advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan for your animal.

We’re not perfect, and neither is the available research. Evidence changes, new work gets published, and what suits one animal may be wrong for another. Species, breed, age, weight and existing conditions all change the answer.

Use this as a starting point for your own reading and for the conversation with your veterinarian, particularly if your animal is on medication, is under treatment, has an existing condition, is pregnant, very young or very old, or if anything about their condition is changing quickly.

Let’s start with the cat behind the indoor label

Living indoors gives us part of a cat’s setting, but it does not describe everything dinner needs to account for. Life stage, body condition, activity and medical history still matter; indoor describes the setting rather than one nutritional condition.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) explains that cats have nutritional needs that differ from dogs’. Cats differ from one another too: a sedentary adult, a growing kitten and an older cat with a diagnosed condition do not need the same feeding plan simply because they live indoors.

Begin with your cat’s age, body condition and health. Then check what the manufacturer means by “indoor” rather than letting that word decide the whole feeding plan.

We are comparing ordinary retail foods for healthy adult cats. None of these five formulas is presented here as treatment for urinary disease, obesity or a digestive disorder.

Is an all-life-stages statement a portion instruction?

The label’s life-stage wording tells us something different from the amount to put in the bowl. “All life stages” describes which nutritional needs the formula is designed to meet. It does not mean kittens, adults and seniors should eat identical portions.

A cup measures volume, not calories. Goodbowl’s label states 400 kilocalories per cup; that helps identify how much energy the food supplies, but cannot establish a portion for a cat without an individual assessment.

The guaranteed analysis gives minimums for some nutrients, such as protein, and maximums for others, such as moisture. Those limits are not exact amounts in every serving. To compare percentages with wet food, you also need to account for the water content.

Read the full ingredient list too. “Chicken” in a recipe name does not mean chicken is its only animal-derived ingredient, which may matter when a cat has dietary restrictions or a relevant medical history.

Ordinary retail food and a diet chosen to manage a medical condition need different discussions. We are comparing these foods for healthy adults. A diagnosed condition may require an individual nutritional plan that an indoor label cannot provide.

Life stage tells you which needs the recipe is intended to meet; calories help describe how much energy it supplies; ingredients tell you what went into it. None alone chooses dinner for an individual cat.

How do these cat foods’ adequacy statements differ?

Now let’s put the nutrition statements beside one another, keeping the exact recipe attached to each. As the FDA explains, a complete-and-balanced claim can be supported by meeting AAFCO nutrient profiles or passing a feeding trial under AAFCO procedures. A formulation statement refers to meeting the specified nutrient levels; a feeding-test statement refers to that trial method. Hill’s Adult Indoor Chicken and the current Pro Plan Indoor + Hairball Turkey & Rice label O462725 cite feeding tests for adult maintenance. Goodbowl says it is formulated for all life stages, while Royal Canin cites an adult-maintenance formulation. IAMS describes complete and balanced adult nutrition, but we could not verify the full wording explaining how that was established.

How to read the comparison: Unless a study or institutional finding is identified, product descriptions come from the named manufacturers’ records. A listed feature does not establish a health, safety or performance benefit. An unresolved entry means we could not verify the information, not that the product lacks it.

Prices are U.S. dollars before shipping and tax; the dates are in the purchase records below. Bag weights differ, so entry prices do not compare equal amounts of food or daily feeding costs. Where information is unverified, we have not substituted figures from a similar recipe.

What we learned

These bags do not all make the same nutritional statement. Hill’s and the current Pro Plan cite adult-maintenance feeding tests; Royal Canin cites a maintenance formulation; Goodbowl is formulated for all life stages. IAMS describes complete and balanced adult maintenance, but we could not verify its full supporting statement. None of that establishes which food is best for an individual indoor cat.

The cat at the window may look still while following every movement outside. That same attention to the individual matters at dinner: your cat’s age, activity, body condition and health help the veterinary team interpret the label.

What We Still Want To Know

We still need a legible current IAMS energy declaration and complete adequacy statement, along with exact Hill’s dry-food nutrient values. Those fields must come from the matching recipe and market. A lifestyle label cannot fill them or establish comparative weight, digestive or hairball outcomes.

Questions for the Pack

Which label information has made the feeding conversation clearer for your indoor cat? We would welcome exact recipe names and questions you brought to your veterinarian, rather than treating an owner’s response as a comparative feeding trial.

Research details

This is a source-based comparison, not a feeding or clinical trial. Hill’s Adult Indoor product record was published in November 2023 and the Goodbowl chicken record in June 2025. Accessible manufacturer records, the current Pro Plan O462725 label and its matching seller record were checked October 7, 2026. Royal Canin’s exact product record carries a September 29, 2022 creation date. IAMS’s matching product record has an August 10, 2026 publication timestamp. The current Pro Plan O462725 label document’s internal metadata records its creation on July 24, 2026; that is a document-creation date, not a claim about its public publication date. FDA and AAFCO’s institutional guidance supplied the explanations of nutritional adequacy, species requirements and label guarantees. Unverified label fields remain explicitly open. We did not transfer wet-food text to Hill’s dry chicken product or claim sourcing proves efficacy.
