Wanting your dog to enjoy dinner comfortably is a caring place to begin. When a dog’s digestion is unsettled, the “sensitive stomach” shelf can feel reassuring. We compared five foods sold for digestive care and found different protein mixtures, age or size limits, and calories per cup. None is established here as a diet for diagnosing food allergy.

In this guide, we’ll first separate everyday digestive care from an allergy investigation. Then we’ll meet five foods, compare calories and nutritional statements, and discuss what an improvement after a food change can and cannot establish.

Hill’s Small Bites, Wellness CORE Chicken & Brown Rice, Purina Pro Plan Salmon & Rice, Royal Canin Medium Digestive Care and Eukanuba Special Care Sensitive Digestion are sold for digestive care. They differ in ingredient mixtures, age or size limits and declared nutritional information. The U.S. foods and Eukanuba’s UK recipe have different regional labels.

Start with what is troubling your dog and what the veterinary team wants a food change to accomplish. The word “sensitive” alone cannot answer those questions.

A NOTE FROM WATERSEDGE

We read the research, we talk to people who do this work, and we try to make complicated animal-health information easier to understand. What you’re reading reflects how we’ve interpreted and organized what we found. It is educational, not veterinary advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan for your animal.

We’re not perfect, and neither is the available research. Evidence changes, new work gets published, and what suits one animal may be wrong for another. Species, breed, age, weight and existing conditions all change the answer.

Use this as a starting point for your own reading and for the conversation with your veterinarian, particularly if your animal is on medication, is under treatment, has an existing condition, is pregnant, very young or very old, or if anything about their condition is changing quickly.

Let’s start with digestive care and allergy diets

A food sold for digestive care and a diet used to investigate allergy serve different purposes. The American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) 2023 allergy guidelines describe a supervised diet trial, followed by reintroducing the previous food if symptoms improve. A food sold for digestive or skin care is not automatically suitable for investigating an allergy.

However, choosing an everyday food is different from investigating a suspected allergy. The latter depends on veterinary assessment, the exact ingredients, production controls and the rest of what the animal eats.

A recipe name can help us begin. It cannot finish that investigation.

Why do these foods have different calories per cup?

A scoop measures space, while calories tell us about energy, so the two deserve a look together. Hill’s, Purina and Royal Canin report different energy per cup and per kilogram. A cup is a volume measure, not an equal-weight comparison across foods.

Hill’s reports 3,747 kcal/kg and 393 kcal/cup; Purina’s inspected label reports 3,903 and 449; Royal Canin reports 3,823 and 321. The foods have fairly similar calories by weight, but larger differences per cup. Different kibble dimensions and the amount packed into a cup can change the weight that volume contains. These label values do not tell us which formula fits a dog’s symptoms or prescribe a ration.

The practical discovery is simple: a food’s energy information belongs to its exact bag. Keeping the same scoop after switching foods can change the number of calories your dog eats.

Does a food response by itself diagnose an allergy?

If symptoms improve after an ordinary food change, tell the veterinary team what changed. That improvement alone does not identify an allergy; AAHA’s diagnostic process also includes a supervised return to the previous food.

Smaller kibble pieces do not prove the food is easier to digest. It is perfectly reasonable to care about piece size while asking a separate question about the formula.

Knowing where ingredients come from does not tell us whether a food improved digestion or skin symptoms in a study. Look for research on the finished formula and the dogs being discussed.

The presence of a favored ingredient does not tell us whether the whole food supplies the right balance of nutrients. Conversely, an unfashionable ingredient name does not establish that a formula is unsuitable.

These distinctions make the comparison more useful, because they keep a dog’s actual problem from disappearing beneath friendly packaging language.

The exact foods at a glance

The nutritional statement explains which life stage a food is intended to support. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) provides nutrient profiles and feeding-test procedures. A formulation statement means the recipe meets the stated nutrient profile; a feeding-test statement means animals ate it under the specified procedure. Both can support a complete-and-balanced claim. Neither shows that a food treats digestive symptoms or a suspected allergy.

How to read the comparison: Unless a study or institutional finding is identified, product descriptions come from the named manufacturers’ records. A listed feature does not establish a health, safety or performance benefit. An unresolved entry means we could not verify the information, not that the product lacks it.

Prices carry their observation dates and currencies in each listing, before shipping or tax. Not established means unresolved information, not an absent feature. The UK product’s regional availability and labeling prevent a simple US price comparison. All five are sold for digestive care. Their inclusion here does not establish that they treat a dog’s digestive illness.

What we learned

The bags offer different practical details: smaller kibble, named microorganisms, salmon as the leading ingredient, a medium-dog age and size range, or a particular UK fiber blend. Compare those details with your dog’s needs, while keeping food-allergy investigation under veterinary direction.

Knowing what the food is intended to do makes the choice easier to discuss. Bring the exact label and your dog’s symptoms to the veterinary team, rather than relying on “sensitive” on the front of the bag.

What We Still Want To Know

We would like studies of the exact current foods in dogs with the digestive or skin problems the foods are marketed to address. We also need a current energy value for the UK Eukanuba Special Care recipe; the older Daily Care formula’s value cannot stand in for it. The detailed publication and version history is recorded below.

Questions for the Pack

Which part of a food label has made a digestive-care conversation clearer for you: the full ingredient list, the life-stage statement or the energy values? If you changed foods, what else changed at the same time? Owner observations can suggest questions for reporting; they cannot establish a clinical effect.

Research details

This is a manufacturer-record comparison, not a feeding test. The Hill’s Small Bites product record was published in November 2024. Recipe details were observed October 6, 2026; seller prices carry the dates shown above.

New manufacturer pages and Purina’s exact M444922 label were inspected for the expanded five-product comparison. The label’s October 2024 hosting path does not establish its original publication date. Royal Canin’s matching nutritional declarations appear in its February 2025 product book, and Purina’s exact recipe declarations appear in its 2026 product guide. These edition dates do not establish the original dates of the separate pages or standalone label PDFs.

For Eukanuba’s current UK Special Care recipe, the original January 2024 company catalog and the exact distributor transition notice establish that the recipe changed after January 2024 and by October 7, 2026. We could not establish the exact day its nutritional details changed.

We did not transfer data between markets, count pack sizes as products, or infer clinical benefit from microbial inclusion. No controlled feeding comparison or veterinary signoff was performed.

The allergy-diagnostic distinction follows AAHA’s 2023 guidelines, which list financial support from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Merck Animal Health and Zoetis.
