A Dental Chew’s Most Useful Feature May Be Its Exact Name

dog dental chews comparison

Five chews differ in their accepted plaque and tartar claims, ingredients, and age or size limits.

AI-generated product composition

A dog hears the packet and arrives promptly. We read the packet and find a rather more complicated proposition: fresh breath, cleaner teeth, a shape that resembles a toothbrush, perhaps a veterinary-looking seal. The dog’s part is wonderfully straightforward. Ours deserves a little investigation. We compared five chews by the dental claims their Veterinary Oral Health Council seals cover.

Let’s begin with plaque and tartar, then meet five dental chews and compare their exact accepted claims. We’ll also look at age and size limits, ingredients, calories and the questions a seal leaves for your veterinary team.

The August 2026 Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) dog list accepts VEGGIEDENT FR3SH, WHIMZEES BRUSHZEES and canine GREENIES for plaque and tartar control; North American DentaLife Daily Oral Care and OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews carry tartar-control acceptance. All five have a verifiable accepted outcome. None of those entries establishes treatment of existing disease or suitability for every dog.

Check the exact product name against the accepted list. A seal for one chew does not apply to every product from the same brand.

A NOTE FROM WATERSEDGE

We read the research, we talk to people who do this work, and we try to make complicated animal-health information easier to understand. What you’re reading reflects how we’ve interpreted and organized what we found. It is educational, not veterinary advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan for your animal.

We’re not perfect, and neither is the available research. Evidence changes, new work gets published, and what suits one animal may be wrong for another. Species, breed, age, weight and existing conditions all change the answer.

Use this as a starting point for your own reading and for the conversation with your veterinarian, particularly if your animal is on medication, is under treatment, has an existing condition, is pregnant, very young or very old, or if anything about their condition is changing quickly.

First, let’s separate plaque from tartar

Plaque and tartar are two different kinds of buildup, so their accepted claims need different names. Plaque is the bacterial film on teeth; tartar forms when plaque hardens with mineral buildup. Acceptance names which buildup the product has been shown to reduce.

Tartar is also called calculus. Evidence of reducing it does not establish every dental benefit, such as reducing plaque or treating gum disease. Keep the exact claim when comparing seals.

An accepted preventive product also does not become a treatment for established disease. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, assessing disease of the gums and tooth-supporting tissues involves examining the mouth, measuring around the teeth with a probe and taking dental X-rays. A chew’s acceptance cannot replace that examination.

The seal is useful when you can say which product earned it and what it covers. It is not a verdict on the whole mouth.

Virbac C.E.T. VEGGIEDENT FR3SH

Listed price: USD 33.99 for Medium, 22–66 lb; 30 count. Chewy

What we like about it: Virbac has given this chew a wonderfully recognizable zigzag. The Z-shaped design gives us something specific to explore alongside the exact FR3SH plaque-and-tartar acceptance, making the packet worth a closer look.

Highlights about the product

  • Age and size limits found in the sources: Check the exact local FR3SH package. The general VEGGIEDENT puppy FAQ does not establish the age limit for FR3SH.
  • VOHC accepted outcome, August 2026: Plaque and tartar
  • Manufacturer design/formulation detail: Z-shaped chew

  • Age and size limits found in the sources: Adult line; Chewy’s April 2, 2024 BRUSHZEES answer excludes dogs under 9 months; minimum weight and exact local pack still need verification

Listed price: USD 10.49 for Small/Medium Chicken; 25 count pouch. Chewy

What we like about it: There is an interesting bit of object design in DentaLife’s porous texture and eight ridges. We wanted to understand how that familiar daily chew differs from its neighbors, beginning with its documented tartar-control acceptance.

Highlights about the product

  • Age and size limits found in the sources: Adult; shop record and attached B554017 technical label exclude under 1 year and under 15 lb; current maker product text instead excludes under 1 year, under 30 lb and over 75 lb. These conflicting records do not establish the selected local pack’s eligibility
  • VOHC accepted outcome, August 2026: Tartar
  • Manufacturer design/formulation detail: Porous texture; eight ridges

Does VOHC acceptance establish suitability for every dog?

Acceptance gives us useful information about a particular dental outcome, but there is still a dog to consider. The named accepted claim does not settle an individual dog’s size, oral condition, medical history or way of chewing.

Check your dog’s age, size, teeth, medical history and way of chewing against the current label and veterinary advice. A VOHC entry cannot answer those individual questions.

Calories and ingredients also deserve attention. Dental chews still add calories and ingredients to the dog’s diet. Tell the veterinary team if your dog follows a prescribed or restricted diet.

However, reducing plaque or tartar is different from treating existing dental disease. A VOHC seal cannot tell you whether a dog’s mouth is healthy.

Which claims does the current dog list accept for these chews?

With that distinction in mind, we can compare the named outcomes side by side. The August 2026 VOHC dog list gives VEGGIEDENT FR3SH, WHIMZEES BRUSHZEES and canine GREENIES plaque-and-tartar acceptance, and North American DentaLife Daily Oral Care and OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews tartar acceptance. Those exact accepted outcomes do not establish treatment of existing disease or individual suitability.

How to read the comparison: Unless a study or institutional finding is identified, product descriptions come from the named manufacturers’ records. A listed feature does not establish a health, safety or performance benefit. An unresolved entry means we could not verify the information, not that the product lacks it.

The table reports the August 2026 institutional list. It does not rank the products, certify suitability for every dog, or turn award years into current clinical-study dates. The listed prices identify size, pack count, market and observation date.

What we learned

Begin with the exact accepted product and the result its acceptance covers. Then check whether its size, age limits, ingredients and use instructions suit the dog who will be chewing it.

The three plaque-and-tartar entries, VEGGIEDENT FR3SH, BRUSHZEES and canine GREENIES, differ from the tartar-only entries for North American DentaLife Daily Oral Care and OraVet. Their formulations, size systems and age statements also differ. Understanding those differences is more useful than making five packages promise the same thing.

What we still want to know

We would like full current ingredient labels, clear local age and weight limits, and complete trial reports showing what each chew was compared with and how much difference it made. The accepted list is useful, but it cannot rank the chews without that information.

Questions for the Pack

For owners and veterinary teams reading dental-chew labels: which exact product name or age-and-size chart was hardest to match to its accepted claim? A current local label can help identify the documentation gap. A dog enjoying a chew does not establish oral-health efficacy.
