Wanting to understand what might help your dog’s digestion is a caring reason to look closely at a label. The probiotic shelf can feel like a contest in very large numbers. Millions become billions, and another row of organisms appears on the label. Yet a dog’s digestive problem is much more specific than that arithmetic. We wanted to understand what those labels can tell us before choosing something for a dog’s bowl.

Let’s begin with what a bacterial count can tell us, then meet five probiotic and synbiotic formulas. We’ll compare ingredients, formats and storage, before returning to the exact-formula research we would need for a dog’s digestive problem.

We compared FortiFlora Canine Powder, Proviable-DC Capsules, Visbiome Vet Advanced GI Care Capsules, Pro-Kolin Advanced for Dogs and FortiFlora PRO Synbiotic Action Canine. The two FortiFlora products have different formulas: PRO adds psyllium fiber.

The American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) 2024 emergency guidance calls for prompt veterinary care for repeated vomiting or severe diarrhea, especially with blood or other signs; it identifies dehydration and weakness as concerns and treats unresponsiveness as an emergency. We did not find evidence showing which of these five products works best for the same diagnosed digestive problem.

We were unable to independently verify the exact current formula for Proviable-DC. Its formulation details reported below are manufacturer declarations, not independently verified measurements or findings of clinical benefit.

Let’s begin with what the bacterial count means

Probiotics contain live microbes; synbiotics combine them with ingredients such as fiber. The CFU count estimates the number of living microbes in a product. That helps us read the label, but it cannot tell us how much the product will help a dog. A higher CFU count alone does not establish a better clinical outcome for dogs. FortiFlora, Proviable-DC, Visbiome Advanced GI, Pro-Kolin Advanced and FortiFlora PRO differ in organisms, accompanying ingredients and format. Evidence needs to match the finished product and the dog’s diagnosed problem.

Why does refrigeration matter when comparing these probiotic capsules?

Storage is part of living with a probiotic, not simply a small detail on the box. The manufacturers give Proviable-DC and Visbiome Advanced GI different storage requirements. Nutramax specifies Proviable-DC storage at or below 77°F, away from sunlight; Visbiome specifies refrigeration at 2–8°C and cold shipping. Those handling differences do not, by themselves, establish a clinical advantage.

How to read the comparison: Unless a study or institutional finding is identified, product descriptions come from the named manufacturers’ records. A listed feature does not establish a health, safety or performance benefit. An unresolved entry means we could not verify the information, not that the product lacks it.

How do these five canine probiotic formulations differ?

The manufacturers’ records show several differences between the formulas. Ordinary FortiFlora offers the simpler SF68 powder; FortiFlora PRO adds psyllium. Proviable-DC and Visbiome offer different, identified capsule blends with different storage demands. Pro-Kolin combines a probiotic with fibers and clays in a paste.

The next question is whether the exact formula has been studied for your dog’s diagnosed problem. A large count cannot answer that. Nor can improvement after starting both a supplement and a new diet tell us which change helped. We did not find evidence establishing one of these products as the best choice.

What We Still Want To Know

We want recent studies testing each complete formula in dogs with a clearly identified digestive problem. Results from one probiotic cannot be assumed to apply to all the others. Current plain-FortiFlora label details and storage records would make this five-product comparison more complete. A formula containing fiber or clay needs to be studied as that full combination.

Questions for the Pack

For veterinary professionals and readers following probiotic research: have you found a recent study of one of these exact formulas in dogs with a diagnosed digestive problem? Please share the paper and the product version it tested, or a current label that helps explain a difference between the formulas described here. An owner’s recovery story alone cannot establish the supplement’s effect.
